Know Your Benefits: What is an EOB?

Whether you’ve been working for two weeks or 20 years, navigating the benefits landscape can be a little confusing. This is particularly true when it comes to interpreting forms and documents you might receive from our insurance carrier. One of the most common documents is the Explanation of Benefits, or EOB statement. The EOB details how much of a doctor or hospital visit was covered by your VUMC insurance and how much you are required to pay. The EOB is not a bill. If you owe money for a medical visit or procedure, you will receive a bill from the provider.

VUMC declares flu season over

With summer right around the corner, flu activity in the country has slowed. As a result, VUMC has officially declared the end of its influenza season. Leaders may stop monitoring the immunization portal to ensure their new hires receive immunizations, provide proof of immunizations or request an exemption. Due to COVID, employees will continue to wear masks based on VUMC’s guidance. It is still good to remain cautious and remember mitigation efforts — like proper hand washing and covering your cough or sneeze.

Changes to EdAssist website coming soon

Beginning Wednesday, April 28, at 6 p.m. employees will access the EdAssist web portal through a new URL, https://vumc.edassist.com. The EdAssist portal allows benefits eligible employees to submit and check tuition assistant applications, submit documentation and view payment information. The updated web portal will retain its functionality while enhancing the user experience. All existing applications are still available on the updated platform, and the login will not change.  The new site features:

New course format for BLS, ACLS, and PALS renewal training

Resuscitation Training and Development recently launched the new HeartCode Complete blended learning program to the Medical Center. HeartCode Complete is an American Heart Association program which allows staff to complete Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric  Advanced Life Support (PALS) renewal training at their own pace, on their own schedule, and without attending a classroom-based course.

Payroll tax deferral statement

Will VUMC participate in the Presidential Memorandum signed Aug. 8 deferring the withholding and depositing of payroll taxes? After reviewing the guidance from the IRS about the payroll tax deferral program, Vanderbilt University Medical Center will not participate in the tax deferral program and will keep withholding payroll taxes from employee paychecks and remitting them to the federal government.
